Both my father and maternal grandfather were WW2 veterans. As a boy, I was always fascinated by the war and curious about their reluctance to talk about it. They both took their stories to the grave when I was young. I read Legion of the damned when I was in high school and was struck by the "no holds barred" portrayal of the realities of war described therein. I then went on to do my national service and got my own taste of war. A very different type of war, but filled with the same brutality and camaraderie. The nature of war, and the soldiers who have to fight in them, remains the same it seems.
